The Authority or Accredited Test Laboratories (ATL) performs the Type Approval of television White Space devices (WSDs) in accordance with the Type Approval Regulation, 2013, the Regulations on the use of Television White Spaces, 2018 and other applicable standards. The Authority issues Type Approval Certificate to applicants if their WSDs meet the Type Approval requirements
This process of WSD type approval is subdivided into two main parts:
The Authority or an ATL assesses the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio emission performance of specific models of WSD to ascertain if they comply with the Type Approval Regulations, 2013, the Regulations on the use of Television White Spaces, 2018 and other applicable standards. The WSD is strictly required to operate within the radio frequency band 470 MHz to 694 MHz (excluding the Radio Astronomy sub-band 606 MHz to 614 MHz), without causing harmful interference to the incumbent users of the band as well as to other primary services outside of the band.
The Authority or ATL assesses specific models of WSD to ascertain if they can correctly communicate with the S-GLSD in compliance with the Regulations on the use of Television White Spaces, 2018. The interactions between WSD and theS-GLSD are through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), Protocol to Access White-space Databases (PAWS), Request for Comments (RFC) 7545, with support for ICASA Ruleset (ICASA-TVWS-2018).
